Virgin Founder, Sir Richard Branson and SpaceshipOne (SS1) designer, Burt Rutan, today reveal SS2 to the public for the first time since construction of the world’s first manned commercial spaceship began in 2007.  SS2 has been designed to take many thousands of private astronauts into space after test programming and all required U.S. government licensing has been completed.

The unveiling represents another major milestone in Virgin Galactic’s quest to develop the World’s first commercial space line providing private sector access to space using an environmentally benign launch system for people, payload and science.  The spaceship draws on the experience developed during the successful flights of SS1 in 2004, which won the Ansari X-Prize for completing the world’s first manned private space flights.  The SS2 design will be refined and completed during an extensive test flying program to commence shortly, and it will be an entirely new vehicle capable of carrying up to 6 passenger astronauts and up to 2 pilot astronauts into space on a sub-orbital flight.

The unveil itself will take place at Mojave Air and Spaceport as darkness falls on the famous aviation and spaceflight location.  Subject to certain U.S. regulatory requirements that will guide the unveiling, SS2 will be attached to her WK2 mothership which was last year unveiled and named EVE after Sir Richard Branson’s mother. In the future, WK2 will carry SS2 to above 50,000 feet (16 kilometres) before the spaceship is dropped and fires her rocket motor to launch into space from that altitude. In honour of a long tradition of using the word Enterprise in the naming of Royal Navy, US Navy, NASA vehicles and even science fiction spacecraft, Governor Schwarzenegger of California and Governor Richardson of New Mexico will today christen SS2 with the name Virgin Space Ship (VSS) ENTERPRISE. This  represents not only an acknowledgement to that name’s honorable past but also looks to the future of the role of private enterprise in the development of the exploration, industrialisation and human habitation of space.

The emergence of new commercial space companies like Virgin Galactic will be an engine for employment, growth and the creation of a new technology and science base in the United States. Recent research has indicated that 12,500 jobs have already been created by the new space companies; the Virgin Galactic project alone is creating significant opportunities for employment in both the company itself and with suppliers in both California and New Mexico. Approximately 600 people are now working on activities relating to the project and it is estimated that this figure will rise to over 1,100 jobs during the peak of the construction phase at the space port and through the introduction of the commercial space vehicles into regular astronaut service.

Both WK2 and SS2 represent state of the art environmentally sensitive industrial development in their use of carbon composite materials technology, which has now been identified as a key future contributor to the increasingly urgent requirement by the commercial aviation sector for dramatically more fuel efficient aircraft.  WK2 is powered by four Pratt and Whitney PW308A engines, which are amongst the most powerful. economic and efficient commercial jet engines available making it a mould breaker in carbon efficiency.  SS2 will be powered by a unique hybrid rocket motor, which is currently under development.

The twin fuselage and central payload area configuration allow for easy access to WK2 and to the spaceship for passengers and crew; the design also aids operational efficiencies and turnaround times. The mothership has now also completed a year of rigorous and successful first phase flight testing prior to today’s attachment of SS2.

Commenting on the unveiling, Sir Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Galactic said:  “This is truly a momentous day. The team has created not only a world first but also a work of art. The unveil of SS2 takes the Virgin Galactic vision to the next level and continues to provide tangible evidence that this ambitious project is not only moving rapidly, but also making tremendous progress towards our goal of safe commercial operation”.

Burt Rutan, Founder of Scaled Composites added: “All of us at Scaled are tremendously excited by the capabilities of both the mothership and SS2.  Today is the culmination of a dream that began many decades ago, was stimulated by Paul Allen’s funding of our X-Prize winning SS1 and then moved forward to commercial reality by Sir Richard and Virgin’s visionary investment in a new future for space transportation”.

SpaceShipTwo will be unveiled after darkness has fallen over the Mojave Desert to the sound of a space-themed anthem from Britain’s biggest DJs, Above & Beyond.  Fittingly titled “Buzz” the track will sample Buzz Aldrin’s original moon landing dialogue. Following the naming by Governors Richardson and Schwarzenegger, the DJs will also perform an exclusive set at the celebration cocktail party which will follow and feature the first ever IceBar in the desert hosted by Absolut and the world famous Swedish IceHotel. All the guests will be protected from the desert cold by designer space jackets supplied by PUMA. Finally, to close off the celebrations, all the guests will have the opportunity to view the stunning night skies using specialist telescopes supplied by Ron Dantowitz of the Clay Observatory whose unique tracking cameras followed SS1 into space during the epic flights of 2004.

Wow, in echt sieht es irgendwie größer aus, als es die Modelle und Zeichnungen erahnen liessen.

Ok hier noch zwei Bilder.

Das war wohl erstmal alles. Gibt noch ein paar mehr Bilder, die aber alle mehr oder weniger dasselbe zeigen. Morgen um 11 Uhr gibt es neue Fotos und Videos von dem Event selbst heute Abend.

Das erste Raumschiff soll ja jetzt wirklich VSS Enterprise heißen. Damit wird es also wirklich eine Enterprise geben, die ins Weltall fliegt, auch wenns nur kurz ist. Und das alles nur wegen Star Trek. Aber eine orbitale Enterprise kommt sicher auch noch irgendwann.

Bleibt noch die Frage, ob das Innere des Raumschiffs auch schon teilweise fertig ist oder ob man nur mal schnell die fertige Struktur angestrichen hat.

Zum ersten: Jep ich bin schon gespannt was sich Burt Ratan da wieder einfallen lassen wird 
Der Knickflügel dürfte dann aber wohl kaum Anwndung finden oder?
Auch bleibt die Frage ob die Struktur dann auch weitgehend aus Verbundwerkstoffen bestehen kann/wird.

Zum zweiten: Ich denke gewisse Dinge werden im Inneren bestimmt schon eingebaut sein. Die ersten Bilder der Rohstruktur gab es vor über ein-einhalb Jahren, da wird man wohl mehr als nur ein paar Strukuturteile drangebaut haben.

Ich meinte damit nicht, dass die orbitale Enterprise unbedingt von Virgin Galactic sein muss, sondern ganz allgemein. Kann ja auch von NASA, ESA oder sonstwem sein.

Im öffentlichen Bilderbereich der Virgin Galactic-Hauptseite sind die oben zu sehenden Bilder auch in höherer Auflösung zu sehen. Darauf ist mir auch etwas Neues aufgefallen:

Auf den Bildern in denen man das WK2/SS2-Gespann von hinten sieht sind auf der rechten Seite des Hangars sehr lange Verbundwerkstoff-Teile zu sehen, die Flügelholme sehr sehr ähneln. Von der Größe her müsste es sich dabei um Holme für ein Flugzeug in WK2-Größe handeln.

Hat man etwa schon den Bau der zweiten WK2 begonnen?

Meine Vermutung ist, dass man die Erprobung mit mehr als einen TierTwo-Gespann (WK2/SS2) durchführen wird.

Der Name des zweiten SS2 steht im übrigen auch schon länger fest: VSS Voyager

Eve Branson, who admits to being near her 90s, stopped by while we were there to look at her likeness, which was painted by a grandson, Ned Rocknroll.

"These are your belly-dancing days," Richard Branson joked.

"Could have made the boobs a little bit bigger," his mother said, grinning all the while.

"Never satisfied, never satisfied," the son replied.

Eve Branson said she was indeed satisfied, calling the likeness "marvelous" and congratulating her grandson, the artist. "Hey, if you put your grandmother on the side of a spaceship, you're all good," Ned Rocknroll said.

Das  Nose-Art mit der schönen Dame am Rumpf von SS2 hat Richard Bransons Mutter zum Vorbild, wohlgemerkt wie sie in den 40ern aussah. Das "Original" geht mittlerweile auf die 90 zu. Das Bild ist aber auch ein Familienprojekt: Es malte ihr Enkel Ned Rocknroll.

Interessanter Dialog zwischen Milliardär und Mutter bezüglich dem Bild:

Richard: "Das waren deine Bauchtanz-Jahre."
Mutter: "Die Brüste hätten etwas größer ausfallen können."
Richard: "Niemals zufrieden, niemals zufrieden."

In der Tat war die alte Dame zufrieden. Sie gratulierte ihrem Enkel zu dem Bild.

Kommt gut.  Und, sieht echt aus. 

Offenbar sind die sehr stolz auf Ihr Gefährt. Zu Recht wie ich finde. Ein Ferrari hat es schwer angesichts dem was die bieten. Da kauf ich lieber ein SLK und spar den Rest für so ein Adventure.

(Auch wenn ich für beides noch ne ganze Weile sparen muss, aber wer weiß, wenn ich alt bin, ist sowas vielleicht erschwinglich)

wow, tolle Bilder. Ich bin schon gespannt die beiden, also SS2 und WK2, zusammen in der Luft zu sehen.
Und WK2 später bei den Tests im "All".

Unwahrscheinlich! 

Da zum Flug zu dem Preis sicher ein Programm gehört, dass deutlich über den reinen Flug hinaus geht und auch wesentlich mehr Zeit in Anspruch nimmt.
Ich schätze, dass das ein Programm einnimmt, dass zumindest Wochenendfüllend ist, mit persönlicher Abholung zu Hause un separatem Jet nach Mojave.
Das Ganz wird schon Tage vor beginnen. Sollte da jemand krank werden  oder sonstwie unpässlich, stehen wohl zu jedem zeitpunkt Ersatzpassagiere bereit, die dann womöglich kaum merken, das sie "Ersatz" sind, wenn ihr Flug um ein paar Wochen vorgezogen wird.

Was ich nicht glaube ist, dass es dort praktisch abgehen wird wie an einem normalen Airport und man ggf. vorort für den nächsten freien Flug Tickets kauft. Zumindest nicht die ersten Jahre ... 

Ich finde es wirklich erstaunlich wie wenig in den Medien über den Roll-Out berichtet wird. Selbst beim Boeing 787-Roll-Out gab es mehr Berichte und Meldungen...

Geht. Es war im Radio / Fernsehen und auch im Internet anständig vertreten.

Nein nix neues. Aber der Innenraum von SS2 wurde nicht gezeigt, woraus man schließen kann, dass er nicht fertig ist oder Branson sich das für den nächsten Auftritt aufhebt. Oder vermutlich beides.

"She wasn't even painted three days ago and she won't be flying in the next few weeks, that's for sure." However, Rutan adds that he's confident test flights will begin in 2010.

Das Raumschiff wurde vor drei Tagen erst angemalt und es gibt definitv keinen ersten Flug in den kommenden Wochen. Aber Testflüge sollen in 2010 beginnen. Bei WK2 hat es auch fast ein halbes Jahr bis zum ersten Flug gedauert. Ich hoffe es geht diesmal schneller.

Im Gegenteil...
Vergleich doch mal die Berichterstattung über den SpaceShip2 Rollout mit dem bei ner ganzen Shuttle/Soyuz/wasauchimmer Mission.
Bei allem Respekt für dieses tolle Schiff, ich finds ungerecht wenn in den Nachrichten "Shuttle" steht. Das weckt doch bei nicht-Raumfahrtfans den Eindruck, die NASA wäre dumm, wo es doch so auch geht.
Es gibt ja viele Menschen, die denken ab ner bestimmten Höhe geht die Schwerkraft los. Aber darum gehts ja nicht.. Über die Quantität der Berichterstattung kann ich mich nicht beschweren.

Aber egal, ich freu mich schon auf den Anblick, wenn WhiteKnight 2 das erste mal mit SpaceShip 2 zum Testflug abhebt
