The launch of the Missile Defense Agency’s NFIRE satellite on an Air Force Minotaur 1 rocket is scheduled for launch at 3:11 a.m. (EDT), Monday, April 23, from the NASA Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. The mission will be using the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport’s launch pad on the south end of Wallops Island.

Also der zweite Orbitalflug einer Minotaur von Wallops Island, Virginia. Leider wird es keine Live-Videoübertragung geben, nur Textmitteilungen.
Die verwendete Minotaur 1 ist eine Kombination aus Minuteman-II und Pegasus.

Start wurde um einen Tag verschoben, nachdem der Countdown bei T-25 Minuten abgebrochen wurde.

The Missile Defense Agency's NFIRE sensor research spacecraft launched aboard an Orbital Sciences Minotaur rocket at 2:48 a.m. EDT (0648 GMT) today from Wallops Island, Virginia. Results of the launch weren't immediately announced. An initial countdown Monday was scrubbed by a ground support equipment problem.

Minotaur 1 rocket was successfully launched at 2:48 a.m. EDT today from the
NASA Wallops Flight Facility, Va.
    The four-stage rocket carried the Defense Department's Missile Defense
Agency's (MDA) Near Field Infrared Experiment (NFIRE) satellite.
    This was the second Minotaur 1 launch from Wallops in just over four
months. The previous mission on Dec. 16, 2006, carried the Air Force
Research Laboratory's TacSat-2 satellite.
    "This launch again demonstrates the unique capabilities of the Wallops
Flight Facility, which includes the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport, to
efficiently support the placing of satellites into Earth orbit. NASA is
particularly appreciative of the support provided by the US Coast Guard, US
Fish & Wildlife, Virginia Marine Resource Commission, and state and county
security and emergency preparedness organizations," said Dr. John Campbell,
Director of the NASA Wallops Flight Facility.

preparation for this launch and the launch itself went very smoothly,"

    The next Minotaur 1 rocket launch from Wallops is currently scheduled

In diesem Jahr werden zwei Minuteman ICBM von Vandenberg starten, umd die Fähigkeiten des Satelliten zu testen, ich weiß aber noch nicht ob es die regulären Minuteman III oder die Minuteman II TLV sein werden. Mal abwarten.

Was lese ich denn da bei Spaceflighnow.com, die zweite Nutzlast von NFIRE wurde von der deutschen Regierung gesponsort und soll Laserkommunikationen testen, die zur Abwehr von Raketen betragen sollen.

The satellite's main payload is called the Track Sensor Payload. The secondary experiment onboard was provided by the German government to test laser communications for missile defense applications, officials said.

Hier steht zur deutschen Nutzlast, dass sie Laserkommunikation mit TerraSAR-X und der Bodenstation (Oberpfaffenhofen?) durchführen soll. Hergestellt wurde das ganze von Tesat-Spacecom.

DLR sagt hierzu:
Auf TerrarSAR-X und NFIRE fliegen jeweils ein LCT (Laser Communications Terminals) mit. Sie sollen eine mehr als 100fach so große Datenübertragungsrate wie des Experiment auf ARTEMIS (50 MBit/s) haben.

Ob das alles direkt mit Raketenabwehr zu tun hat, lässt sich da nicht rauslesen. Man bedient sich aber auf jeden Fall des NMD-Programms der Amerikaner, um das Experiment kostengünstig ins Weltall zu bringen. Ursprünglich sollte eine andere Nutzlast auf NFIRE mitfliegen, die sich wohl sogar vom Satelliten trennen und einem anfliegenden Gefechtskopf nähern sollte (Kill-Vehicle).

Der für morgen angesetzte Start einer Minotaur II (modifizierte Minuteman II) wurde auf Sonntag verschoben. Der Start soll in Vandenberg am frühen Sonntagmorgen stattfinden. Sie soll als Zielobjekt für NFIRE dienen, welcher Daten vom Aufstieg der Minotaur sammeln soll.

Program officials want to be very precise in preparing for the missile launch due to the fact that the overall objective is to collect as much data as possible from the boosting missile.

The collected data will subsequently be used in the development effort for boost phase missile defense technology, which will help to develop missile defense systems capable of shooting down a hostile ballistic missile within the first few minutes after it is launched.

Also der Start der Minotaur II wurde verschoben, um noch einige Ausrüstung an Bord von NFIRE zu optimieren.

Neues Startdatum für die Minotaur II ist der frühe Morgen (PST) am 21. August.

The launch is set to occur after having been delayed so that program officials could continue to optimize data collection equipment on board the orbiting NFIRE satellite.  Program officials want to be very precise in preparing for the missile launch due to the fact that the overall objective is to collect as much data as possible from the boosting missile.  

The primary mission of the NFIRE satellite is to collect high and low resolution images of a boosting rocket to improve understanding of missile exhaust "plume" observations and plume-to-rocket body discrimination during three plume signature types: targets of opportunity, dedicated missile fly-bys, and ground observations.

The collected data will be used in the development effort for boost phase missile defense technology, which will help to develop missile defense systems capable of shooting down a hostile ballistic missile within the first few minutes after it is launched.

Die Minotaur II ist erfolgreich gestartet. Durch den Test kann NFIRE hoch- und niedrigaufgelöste Aufnahme eines ballistischen Raketenstartes und ihrer Abgasfahne machen. Für den Start verantwortlich war der 30th Spacewing der USAF.

Am 18. Oktober wird das nächste Test Launch Vehicle von LF-06 in Vandenberg gestartet, das von NFIRE beobachtet werden soll.
