Space Adventures Press Releases:
August 24, 2006
Space Adventures, Ltd., the first and only company to have sent paying passengers to space, announces that an Ecuadorian has made a reservation on a future suborbital spaceflight.
With this spaceflight reservation, Ronnie Nader Bello, 39, of Guayaquil, will become the first-ever Ecuadorian to fly to space with Space Adventures. He will be among other pioneers from around the world that will launch from one of Space Adventures' global spaceport locations onboard the Explorer suborbital space transportation system, currently under development.
"I have dreamed of going to space since I was seven," said Mr. Nader. "To achieve a personal goal while becoming the first Ecuadorian in space gives me a sense of overwhelming pride. My dedication to the exploration of space led me to partner with Space Adventures because it is the only company to have sent civilians to space."
"Mr. Nader's enthusiasm for space exploration is an inspiration to all of us. Space Adventures looks forward to helping him realize his dream of spaceflight," said Eric Anderson, president and CEO of Space Adventures. "Along with many others around the globe, Mr. Nader's enthusiasm is what will perpetuate the space tourism industry."
Space Adventures' suborbital program will consist of a detailed four-day flight preparation and training experience. Each passenger will become familiar with the flight program, critical vehicle systems, flight operations, zero-gravity conditions, in-flight accelerations and spaceflight safety procedures.
The Explorer vehicle will be designed to optimize the customer experience of space travel while maintaining the highest degree of safety. As each suborbital vehicle reaches its maximum altitude of 100 kilometers, passengers will experience up to five minutes of continuous weightlessness, all the while gazing at the blackness of space set against the horizon of Earth. The price for a suborbital spaceflight is $102,000 (USD).
Space Adventures has previously sent three private explorers to orbital space. In 2001, American Dennis Tito fulfilled his dream of space travel; in 2002, the 'First African in Space' Mark Shuttleworth launched; and, last October, American Greg Olsen, took flight. Each Space Adventures' client spent eight days aboard the International Space Station during their orbital spaceflight mission.
Space Adventures, the only company to have successfully launched private explorers to space, is headquartered in Vienna, Va., United States of America, with offices in Cape Canaveral, Fla., Moscow and Tokyo. It offers a variety of programs such as the availability today for orbital spaceflight missions to the International Space Station, commercial missions around the moon, Zero-Gravity and jet flights, cosmonaut training, spaceflight qualification programs and reservations on future suborbital spacecrafts. The company's advisory board includes Apollo 11 moonwalker Buzz Aldrin, Shuttle astronauts Sam Durrance, Robert Gibson, Tom Jones, Byron Lichtenberg, Norm Thagard, Kathy Thornton, Pierre Thuot, Charles Walker, Skylab astronaut Owen Garriott and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Usachev.
